An Arrancar is a Hollow that has removed its mask and has gained Shinigami-like powers.
How to be one There are only two real ways of becoming an Arrancar that are currently known, first off the person will start as a plus and if their soul is not sent to Soul Society the chain on their chest begins to erode. When this chain is completely eroded(Or they are devoured by another hollow) they will go through the evolutions of Hollow to reach the Arrancar.
The first main way known of becoming an Arrancar is by ripping off their own Hollow mask, this can only be done by Gillian+ level Hollow to be able to successfully transform but they gain no boosts in power, if they do it is very small and hardly noticeable. It generally leaves them at a weaker power than most Arrancar who use the second means of transformation.
That second transformation is by using Aizen's Hōgyoku to remove the mask for them, when this is done it actually gives them a boost in power and in most cases gives them more strength than a natural Arrancar. This process is actually called Shinigamification and grants them a more Shinigami like side, completely ridding them of the need to feed on souls.
Abilities Arrancars have techniques called Hollow Techniques, used for pure destruction. The techniques consist of:
- Cero - are high-powered energy blasts that can be fired from various body parts, such as mouth, tongue, hand or fingers.
- Bala - is an Arrancar alternative to Cero. The technique hardens the user's Spiritual Pressure and fires it like a bullet. Although it is weaker than a normal Cero, it moves about twenty times faster and can be fired at a much higher rate, but the damage is much the same.
- Sonido - is the Arrancar equivalent of the Shinigami Flash Steps and the Quincy Hirenkyaku; it allows the user to travel at incredibly high speeds for short distances. Use of Sonído is punctuated by a brief static sound, in contrast to the "swish" sound caused by Flash Steps.
Resurreccion Resurreccion returns the essence of an Arrancar's offensive Hollow abilities to their humanoid bodies. Arrancar seal the nuclei of their abilities within the form of a sword, entirely different from what the Shinigami use. When they release their weapons' seals, they unleash their true power and their true form. The only time they can return to human form is when they reseal their powers in sword form. Changing their form without resealing their powers in a sword is the same as burning off an arm, and if they were to discard part of their released form, while in it, they can never return to normal again.
Because their powers are sealed in their Zanpakutō, an Arrancar's release will usually transform their body into a Hollow-like form, allowing them to use all of their abilities freely. This form usually reflects what the Arrancar looked like as a Hollow, although to highly varying degrees. A Resurrección restores an Arrancar to its "true" form, resulting in significantly various increases in speed, strength, stamina, durability and spiritual power, as well as allowing access to both more powerful variations of previous techniques and completely new abilities. Some Arrancar even gain new weapons as a part of their released form.
Espada Those among the Arrancar that excel in killing power are chosen and favored according to their strength are assigned a number from one to ten, collectively referred to as the Espada, holding absolute power and authority over the Números.
At the time of the group's introduction, the Espada consists of nine males and one female. Each Espada member is chosen for their superior combat ability and then assigned a number from 0 to 9 (0 being the strongest), originally thought to be ranged from 1 to 10, that indicates their rank and relative power level, which is tattooed somewhere on their body
The Espada are given free control over the Números and may choose as many of them as they like to become their Fracción. Similar to the power gap between captains and lieutenants in the Gotei 13, the strength of the Espada far surpasses that of the average Número.
